Transforming Nutrition for Public Health Across the Life Course

Background

Nutrition plays a fundamental role in shaping health and wellbeing throughout the life course, from early-life development to healthy ageing. Optimal nutrition during critical periods, including pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adulthood and older age, influences growth, cognitive development, metabolic health, and the risk of chronic diseases. However, changing dietary patterns, nutritional inequalities, food system challenges, and the increasing burden of malnutrition in all its forms continue to pose significant public health concerns. Advancing nutrition research and translating scientific evidence into effective interventions are essential to improve population health outcomes. A life-course approach provides an integrated framework to address nutrition challenges by considering biological, behavioural, environmental, and social determinants of health across different stages of life. The symposium, which serves as a specialized session of the 5th International Conference on Modern Medicine and Global Health (ICMMGH 2027), will focus on food and public health.

Goal/Rationale

This symposium aims to highlight innovative research and evidence-based strategies that can transform nutrition across the life course. Despite significant advances in nutrition science, challenges remain in translating research findings into sustainable policies, programmes, and practices that effectively improve health outcomes. The growing prevalence of malnutrition, including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and diet-related non-communicable diseases, requires multidisciplinary approaches that integrate research, technology, behavioural science, and public health action. Recent advances in dietary assessment methods, digital health technologies, personalised nutrition, and implementation science provide new opportunities to enhance nutrition interventions and strengthen health systems. This symposium will showcase emerging evidence and practical approaches to bridge the gap between nutrition research and real-world application, supporting healthier populations and more resilient communities.
